ERIN MOORE
8.5 km | 460 m | 3 hours
Another favourite! Off the beaten path, a local hidden gem, yet to be discovered by the masses. Really do hope that it stays that way for a while longer. We love this hike from every aspect…great distance and elevation and the views are simply magical.
We met two of the men (now in their late 70s) who built this trail and many others in their back yard with their bare hands. They started this one in 2000 and it took them almost 7 years to complete. Thanks to their hard work, we get to have epic days like these.
The Trailblazers were formed in the late 1990s and since then they have built over 20 km of trails in Lions Bay, this trail being the first. The initial plan was to build a trail from Lions Bay to Horseshoe Bay to link up with the Trans Canada Trail, but due to the number of watersheds along the way, it was made into a big loop instead.
The trail was renamed to the “Erin Moore Trail” after her tragic death in 2014. At the age of 7, she was killed in a rockslide while walking with her family doing what they love the most. At the beginning of the trail, there is a memorial garden for Erin that is magical.
In 2021, Rudy, one of the trail blazers, passed away and his friends built a memorial bench for him. The hand carved wooden bench that represents Rudy’s long time service to Air Canada is perfectly positioned to face “the three sisters” stand tall three Douglas firs.
Given the elevation, this trail is accessible in the winter as well. It is not maintained, but if there isn’t much snow you can head up there with spikes. You won’t always get a view especially when it’s actively snowing, but it is magical and a nice change from the usual local trails.
Alltrails starts you from below the hwy, but we prefer to drive up Oceanview Road to the end and begin from there. There are very limited parking spaces here and please respect the signs and not bother the locals.
Please help us keep this a hidden gem and respect all the hard work that was put into creating such an incredible place and the memories this place holds. If you do post photos, please only share it’s location with trustworthy people and never tag it on social media.
