EAGLE BLUFFS

Eagle Bluffs is a very popular hike in Vancouver due to its proximity to the city, moderate difficulty and stunning views of the Howe Sound. Most people tend to access the viewpoint as an out and back hike from Cypress mountain lodge via Black Mountain. Black Mountain may sit higher than the Bluffs, but has less promising views and not worth the climb. This section of the trail is quite busy during the summer months so we tend to hike it this way in the winter. The Black Mountain and Cabin Lake portion is well maintained and inbounds. The section out to Eagle Bluffs is considered out of bounds, but on a nice day the trail is doable for a stunning view. Avalance risk is usually low in this area given it’s location.

Since we are always looking to maximize our elevation gain and avoid busy trails, we have found a better way to access the Bluffs. We prefer to complete it as a destination hike from Horseshoe Bay via the Baiden Powell Trail. This of course requires a car to be dropped at the top of Cypress, but it’s worth it on days we have the time for a longer adventure. This is clearly more challenging as the distance is less than 1 km longer, but you are climbing almost three times the elevation. But it’s definitely worth is as you will have the trail up to the Bluffs pretty much to yourself and feel like a million bucks when you’re done since you have climbed an entire mountain! Below is the directions by Alltrails. Instead of an out and back to Black Mountain, continue to Cypress Lodge.
